Initial Teacher Training (ITT)

Train to become a teacher with Merton Special Training Association and benefit from a tailored package of training and support from outstanding, experienced professionals. Training with MSTA will enable you to gain in-depth experience of all aspects of teaching and learning. We currently offer places through our Enhanced Placement Training Route (PGCE) in collaboration with LSBU: London South Bank University and Teaching Apprenticeships in collaboration with e-Qualitas.

You can expect to experience school life from day one of the academic year in September. You will get to know colleagues, school systems and students, as well as receiving training and support from your host school. You will receive high quality mentoring and support from your host school.

Enhanced Placement - training route

MSTA offers the Enhanced Placement Training route in partnership with LSBU. This route is similar to the one year Post Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE), however it is school led rather than university led. Your training will last one academic year and will be provided by LSBU, MSTA and the host school. Those on the training route are expected to fund their own university fees. At the end of your training year you will have a Post Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) including Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).  This route has a Special Educational Needs focus and you will be based in one our partner Special Schools.

Eligibility criteria:

Please check https://getintoteaching.education.gov.uk for course eligibility. You will need to hold a degree, plus GCSE Mathematics, English Language, Science at Grade C/4 or above (or equivalent).

Teaching Apprenticeships 

MSTA offers the Teaching Apprenticeship route with eQualitas. Teaching Apprenticeships are a nationally-recognised, work-based route into teaching. In addition to working towards Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) on successful completion of the course, apprentices will also complete an end point assessment (EPA) after the summer to consolidate learning from initial teacher training. This route is also school led and also has a Special Educational Needs focus. Teaching Apprentices will be based in one of our partner Special Schools.
